Health Reform (ObamaCare)

On March 23rd, 2010 president Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) formerly referred to as the Patient Protection Affordable Care Act (PPACA). It contains a set of comprehensive health insurance reforms that will be implemented in stages, starting in 2010 and continuing over the next few years.

Some of the provisions are already in effect:

  • Lifetime and annual policy limits removed
  • Increased the age a dependent can stay on their parent's policy to 26 years old
  • Children under 19 are guaranteed issue no pre-existing conditions provision apply
  • Preventative services are covered at 100%, with no deductible or copays

Majority of provisions of the ACA are going

into effect starting January 1st, 2014.

October 1, 2013. Open Enrollment Starts January 1, 2014. Coverage Starts March 31, 2014. Open Enrollment Ends Future. Everyone has coverage.

From 2014 forward each individual must prove that they have "essential minimum coverage" or face a penalty. Penalties are: 2014 - $95 per adult, in 2015 - $325, and 2016 - $695.

You may qualify for a subsidy to save money and lower your monthly premium, but only if your employer does not offer coverage, or offers coverage that doesn't meet certain standards. The savings on your premium that you're eligible for depends on your household income.
